Opera in 3 acts

Concept

Peter Grimes is an extrapolation of the rural fishing village and its visual vocabulary, relocated to Latin America and set in the 1980s. Research into English and European fishing communities and their counterparts along the coasts of Central and South America revealed many similarities in clothing function: simplicity of cut, multifunctional layers, nearly indestructible protective outerwear, and materials weathered by sun, wind, and salt.

The 1980s enter through silhouette and proportion, color, exaggerated shoulders, accessories, hair, and makeup. High-end fashion would not reach an isolated coastal village, but television and soap operas would, giving the characters images they could imitate with whatever was available. The period creates a world that is both specific and strangely contemporary, while providing moments of comic exaggeration within the darker landscape of the opera.
